# Why Service SMEs Need Agentic Presence | AIMSOO

> Most discussions about agentic commerce focus on products and checkout flows. But for service SMEs, the first challenge isn't commerce. It's presence.

### Part 1: The Invisible Half

Bessemer Venture Partners recently published an excellent piece called Agentic Commerce: The Rise of the Delegated Buyer. The premise is compelling: AI agents won't just help us shop, they'll increasingly discover, evaluate, purchase and manage transactions on our behalf.

I found myself agreeing with almost all of it.

But I kept waiting for the other half of the economy to appear.

The entire piece is written for brands with checkout flows. Retailers. Apparel companies. Consumer goods businesses. The agentic commerce stack BVP describes (protocols, payment rails, machine-readable storefronts) assumes the seller already has a transactable digital layer to begin with.

Most small businesses don't.

Service SMEs account for more than 60% of GDP across most OECD economies. Around the world, many of the most common small businesses are restaurants, clinics, salons, trades and professional services.

We're not talking about a niche. We're talking about the majority of the small business economy.

The physio clinic. The plumbing business. The family restaurant. The independent hairdresser. The immigration lawyer with two staff members.

Their value isn't shipped in a box. It's delivered through expertise, trust and experience.

BVP has one line that stopped me.

"The brands that win with agents will not be the ones with the best ads. They will be the ones with the cleanest data."

That's right. And it applies just as much, maybe more, to the service SME who has never thought about her data layer in her life.

Before an AI agent can recommend your physio, book your table or call your plumber, it has to know you exist.

Before it can know you exist, it has to understand what you do.

Before it can understand what you do, it needs information it can actually trust.

No business can be chosen by an AI system that doesn't understand it exists.

Presence comes before commerce.

Spend enough time talking to small business owners and you notice the same pattern. Restaurant owners. Clinic operators. Tradespeople. Brilliant at what they do. Many have invested years into their craft and almost none have spent time thinking about how an AI system might interpret their business.

Not because they don't care.

Because until now, they've never had to.

That's changing fast. And the gap between the businesses that solve their presence problem and the ones that don't is going to become very visible, very quickly.

For product businesses, the discovery problem is being worked on. Platforms are building agent-readable storefronts. Protocols are being designed for machine-to-machine transactions. The infrastructure is forming.

For service SMEs, the discovery problem hasn't even been named yet.

It's really an agentic presence problem: ensuring AI systems have accurate, trustworthy, structured information about a business before any transaction can ever be considered. That's not a commerce problem. It's a presence problem. And it affects the majority of small businesses on the planet.

We call this shift agentic commerce because the transaction is changing.

But for millions of service businesses, commerce isn't the first problem AI introduces.

Presence is.

Before AI can buy from you, it has to be able to find you. Before it can find you, it has to understand you. And before it can understand you, someone has to give it something trustworthy to understand.

The first chapter of agentic commerce, for most of the world's small businesses, isn't commerce at all.

Which raises the harder question. Even if we solve the presence problem, even if every service SME has clean, accurate, machine-readable information that AI systems can find and trust, does that actually translate to agentic commerce for a business whose entire value is a human experience?

Can an AI agent sell something you have to feel to understand?

That's what Part 2 is about.

This is Part 1 of a three-part series on what agentic commerce means for service SMEs, the businesses that sell experiences, not products.
