# The Invisible Side of AI Adoption

I've lost count of how many business owners have proudly shown me how they're using AI. They're writing proposals in minutes instead of hours, creating marketing content and responding to customers faster. It's saving them time and helping them run a better business.

Then I ask one question:

"Have you ever asked ChatGPT or Claude what it knows about your business?"

Almost nobody has.

I recently came across a CXOToday article discussing how quickly small businesses are adopting AI. One statistic stood out: the latest generation of AI tools reached roughly 10% adoption in just six months, a milestone that previous technologies took years to achieve. While the article focused primarily on cybersecurity, it made me realize we're only talking about half the story.

We spend a lot of time talking about how SMEs are using AI. We don't talk nearly enough about what AI is saying about them.

When you actually check, the results are often surprising. Sometimes the business doesn't appear at all. Sometimes the phone number is wrong, the address is outdated or core services offered for years aren't even mentioned. Occasionally, AI confidently describes a business that no longer exists. The owners have no idea.

This is the invisible side of AI adoption. While SMEs are learning how to use AI every day, AI is learning about them from data that may be incomplete, outdated or simply wrong.

A modern website alone doesn't solve this. Neither does relying on a single platform. AI systems draw from multiple sources, and when those sources are incomplete or inconsistent, businesses can still be misunderstood.

What makes this especially dangerous is that the problem is entirely invisible. You don't get a notification when AI gets your business wrong. You don't know when a potential customer asks for a recommendation and is quietly routed to a competitor instead. The only thing you notice is that opportunities disappear, and it's easy to blame a dozen other macro factors.

I've seen this happen with restaurants, physios, trades businesses and specialty retailers. These are businesses that spent decades building impeccable local reputations but never stopped to ask what the machine actually thinks of them.

The cybersecurity risks of AI deserve attention, but this blind spot deserves just as much weight. Whether you use ChatGPT or not has no bearing on whether your future customers do. The ecosystem is already forming a view of your business from whatever information it can find.

You don't get to opt out of AI-driven discovery. The question is whether AI understands your business well enough to recommend it
