One thing I keep noticing when talking to small business owners is that they update the platforms that make them money.

A restaurant will update their menu on Uber Eats or DoorDash instantly because if they don't, they lose orders. But their Google Business Profile is often outdated or forgotten. Not because they don't care but because there's no immediate incentive.

Every platform creates its own gravity and small businesses follow the revenue. I've seen the same pattern play out across markets.

That's how you end up with fragmented, inconsistent information everywhere else. Which makes me think this isn't just a tooling problem or an awareness problem. It's an incentives problem.

And until that changes, business data will keep breaking in ways that feel obvious in hindsight.

As AI increasingly becomes the interface between businesses and customers, those fragmented records stop being an operational inconvenience. They become a discoverability problem.

P.S. I've also started realizing how quickly consumers interpret outdated information as negligence when in reality many small business owners are simply overwhelmed trying to manage too many systems at once.
